Treeline Residency

Physicians for the frontier. Our HRSA-funded rural health preventive medicine residency grows the doctors rural America has been waiting for.

Most organizations train the workforce that exists. We decided to grow the one that doesn't yet.

Supported by a three-year grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration, the Treeline Residency trains preventive medicine physicians in rural health — at the frontier, for the frontier. You learn rural medicine the way you learn any terrain: by standing in it.

Residents work across the systems rural health actually runs on: county boards of health, critical access hospitals, community coalitions, environmental health, and the long highway between them. They graduate fluent in the medicine and the machinery — prevention, population health, and the practical craft of building health where infrastructure is thinnest.

Rotations are embedded in rural and frontier Nevada — communities that ask more of a physician, and give more back.

An institute, not just a hospital

Residents train inside a working public health institute: two federal training centers, a live evaluation practice, and a policy desk down the hall.

A national network

Through NPHI's partnerships — ACPM, the National Hispanic Health Foundation, NNPHI, and the HRSA training network — residents build a career's worth of relationships before they finish.

National preventive medicine network

A rural residency should open doors beyond the rotation site.

NPHI's work with the American College of Preventive Medicine and other national partners connects rural training to a broader preventive medicine community — relationships residents can carry throughout their careers.
